I can’t watch tha Q&A. What ships did Jro talk about??

I still haven’t caught up on the whole thing.  Technology!  *shakes fist*

From what I caught:  The one that took me aback the most was him saying he hadn’t intended – or anticipated – Rodimus/Magnus as a ship.  He also talked a bit about Drift/Rodimus (that maybe it could have been a thing – maybe it had been a thing, sometimes – but they wouldn’t have been looking to settle down together, and Rodimus was ultimately happy for Drift and Ratchet); about a definite connection and “maybe a frisson of something” between Megatron and Minimus; about Cyclonus and Tailgate’s wedding (”very loud, a lot of singing”); about whether anything had been planned between Velocity and Swerve (no); about whether there was anything between Dominus and Kaon (”not in the way you’re thinking”).  I’m sure I’m forgetting some, and that’s just from the portion I caught, which was MAYBE 45 minutes out of a… two and a half hour stream?  Something like?

Oh!  And he said Swerve would totally be up for dating Ryan Reynolds.  Which, yes. 🙂

To clarify, people didn’t ask him ABOUT Ryan Reynolds.  Someone asked, “Would Swerve ever date a human?” and the answer was, without hesitation, “He would date Ryan Reynolds.”

There was also a tidbit about a hypothetical Simpatico wedding (although he said the ship itself was implied as eventually canon) – it would, apparently, be very ‘complicated’, in that they’d constantly be trying to outdo each other in subtle little ways. 😉

Oh, yeah, I remember that now!

For some reason, my mental image is just Perceptor and Brainstorm reminiscing years after the wedding, telling the story to someone who wasn’t there:  “Well, it did get a bit complicated, of course.  Dear Stormy and I kept trying to one-up one another.  You know, in subtle little ways.”

*cut to a wedding flashback, with Brainstorm and Perceptor running from an 800-foot-tall walking carniverous wedding cake that shoots flames from its eyes*

Ooooh?

I’m in desperate need of elaboration.

SO.

This was basically in answer to two questions JRo was asked on the Q&A tonight:  “Who had more crushes on them, Rodimus or Getaway?” (Answer:  Getaway) and, “Who was the hottest person on the Lost Light?”  (Answer:  Getaway, followed by Skids.  “Those two were a very hot duo.”)

This delights me to no end.

And honestly, it fits pretty well with my mental image of Getaway:  like Thunderclash, he’s more the classic “hero type” than Rodimus, at least on the surface.  In a different type of narrative, he would be the Chosen One he imagines himself to be.  It’s almost like he’s wandered into the wrong story.

Wonderful. I love it.

You know Getaway put some serious work into becoming that gorgeous. He’s got visible screws on the back of his head, he had to have been considered a brick of cheap parts when he started out.

Yesssss, I love the idea of Getaway as a self-made beauty – especially next to Skids, who, it’s implied, has always been gorgeous, always charismatic.  Skids is the effortlessly stunning forged Outlier who sweeps people off their feet without meaning to; Getaway’s the MTO who had to sweat for every bit of that, and for whom it’s always a conscious thing.  (Kind of like Prowl, who also basically had to learn how to use what he had to manipulate people.)

Now I’m picturing Prowl and Getaway exchanging notes on how to seduce people into doing what you want, Prowl’s coaching Getaway with every hard-won carefully-tested trick he’s picked up over several million years, and Skids gives them this worried look like “You guys have to think about it that hard??”

Skids doesn’t even try. Did he superlearn it or was he born with it. (He was probably born with it.)

Now I want someone to doctor a Maybelline advert to make it about Skids:  “Maybe he’s born with it.  Maybe it’s SUPERLEARNING.” 😀

As for the first part… uh, how did you manage to peek into my unfinished fanfic drafts folder…?

I totally forgot about the Q&A. Are you going to post more things JRo said?

Almost inevitably, yes. 🙂  But I’m not going to be able to do any kind of comprehensive record, so I definitely recommend downloading the playback video from his Instagram, and watching out for the completed video one fan is generously putting together as well.

I WILL tell you that Jack Lawrence apparently draws Rung with JRo’s mannerisms (which, yeah, I can see that, something about the way he holds his head); that Anode and Lug’s wedding song was “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You”; and that JRo eventually ended the stream by sending us all off to have a cold shower because of all the “fervent, thirsty shipping” going on. 😀

Is it wrong that JRo confirming certain ships weren’t even considered or were probably only one-sided at best has kind of left me bummed? I know it shouldn’t change anything, but I think I would have rather just not known about any of it. Otherwise that livestream was wonderfully insightful.

It’s never wrong to feel how you feel.  And I think it’s natural to feel a bit bummed by this.  I was, at the very least, pretty taken aback by a couple of his answers, where I was convinced that a particular ship was being heavily seeded in canon and it turned out he never even considered that pairing.

But you’re right that it doesn’t really change things.  Like – I think it is a little disappointing, and I think part of the disappointment, for me at least, isn’t really about having a pairing become “canon” as such.  We know that the canon is complete as-is, and for all my “GETAWAY CONFIRMED CANONICALLY HOTTEST” bragging last night :P, anything JRo says in a chat or a tweet isn’t actually canon.  And, of course, he’s been so clear and so generous about pointing out that this is our world to play in now; if it’s canon to us, it’s canon.  But… okay, bear with me on this.  I think that the main advantage of a pairing becoming canon, in a general sense (beyond cases where the pairing adds to more diverse representation in media), is that you get to see content from the original creator about your favourite pairing.  Obviously, with LL over, that’s not going to happen now – but these answers from JRo can feel like a chance to get another little drop of canon content about our favourites.  And if someone asks about our favourite ship and the answer is, basically, “I don’t have anything for you on that,” that can be disappointing!  And that’s okay.

I think you probably know as well as I do that, long-term, it doesn’t really matter whether a particular ship got the James Roberts Seal Of Approval in a post-canon Q&A or not; it doesn’t make them less valid.  This doesn’t “sink” anything.  But there’s also nothing wrong with wishing the answer had been different or you hadn’t found out that something wasn’t his intention.

*hugs if you want them*

Homecoming

A typical day has transpired upon the home of Mako as she returns from her daily routine.

But wait!! Could it be??

A rogue cybertronian has wandered into her territory. He appears to be entrapped in his confines.

Knowing full well the hatred of her kind she prepares for the activation procedure.

He awakens none too happy in his new environment and immediately demands surrender and subsequent termination.

After a rather arduous debate, and eventual discovery of my allegiance, he agrees to a truce for mutual benefit.

He is known as Tarn of the DJD, and is now sole guardian and keeper of the pen hoard.💜
